Portable Cord
Providing Reliable Power in Temporary Supply Applications
Portable cord (also known as cordage, electrical cordage, portable cordage, extension cord, or flexible cordage) is a multiconductor cable constructed specifically to provide a flexible temporary electrical power supply for electrical equipment. Portable cord is distinguished from power cable, the latter of which is designed for installation in permanent use applications such as direct burial, cable trays, etc. Portable cord is typically very flexible to accommodate the movement of its intended piece of equipment.
UL Designations for Different Types of Portable Cord
Portable cord can be designed and manufactured to reliably operate in many types of industrial and outdoor environments including the presence of extreme temperatures, water, oil, outdoor weather, etc. Different types of portable cord gauges, conductor counts, jacket materials, voltage level, level of flexibility, and more can be specified to match individual applications.
Key portable cord attributes are identified via a system of letter codes defined by UL per the following table:

For example, a common type of portable cord such as SJOW would denote a 300V cordage with an oil resistant and weather resistant jacket.
